JA Solar, a globally acclaimed photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturer and the leader in solar module shipments in Africa, has entered into a strategic partnership with ARTsolar, South Africa’s premier local PV module manufacturer. This collaboration underscores JA Solar’s commitment to driving renewable energy adoption across Africa while promoting local production and economic development in South Africa.
Addressing South Africa’s Energy Needs with Local Solutions
The partnership is aligned with the South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s (DMRE) Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) and aims to capitalize on future opportunities within the country’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). These initiatives are crucial as South Africa leads the continent in total installed solar gigawatts, a testament to the country’s proactive embrace of renewable energy.
JA Solar’s collaboration with ARTsolar combines global expertise and local innovation to produce high-efficiency, large-format PV modules locally. By investing in South Africa’s renewable energy infrastructure, the partnership addresses the growing demand for clean energy while fostering a self-reliant solar manufacturing ecosystem.
Strengthening Local Manufacturing Capabilities
ARTsolar, founded in Durban in 2010 by entrepreneurs Eshu Seevnarayan, Patrick Goss, and Nhlanhla Zondo, is a 100% South African-owned company with a longstanding reputation in PV manufacturing. Through this partnership, ARTsolar has upgraded its facilities to a cutting-edge 340MW solar PV panel assembly plant, significantly enhancing its production capacity.
The upgraded facility will support the manufacturing of high-quality JA Solar modules, meeting international standards while catering to local market needs. This initiative not only reduces reliance on imports but also boosts South Africa’s localization efforts in the renewable energy sector.
“With this collaboration, we can offer an enhanced range of high-quality, locally produced PV modules to South Africans,” said a JA Solar spokesperson. “Our goal is to support local manufacturing, create jobs, and drive technological transformation in the region.”
Driving Economic Growth and Job Creation
In addition to strengthening South Africa’s renewable energy infrastructure, the partnership between JA Solar and ARTsolar will create significant economic benefits. ARTsolar has already invested heavily in technical training and skills development, collaborating with tertiary institutions to build a skilled workforce.
The new facility is expected to create 150 permanent jobs, bolstering local employment and economic activity. This aligns with the government’s focus on industrialization and job creation while positioning ARTsolar as one of Africa’s leading and only African-owned PV manufacturers.
Eshu Seevnarayan, Chairman of ARTsolar, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “As proud industrialists, the renewed focus on local PV manufacturing has brought a much-needed resurgence of hope for renewable energy and local industries. For 14 years, we have trusted in and anticipated this commitment from the government.”
Reinforcing JA Solar’s Leadership in Africa
JA Solar’s leadership in solar module shipments across Africa is further solidified by this partnership. With South Africa spearheading the continent’s renewable energy transition.
South Africa’s rich natural resources and supportive policies, including a competitive tariff-based bidding system under REIPPPP, make it a strategic hub for renewable energy growth. JA Solar’s investment in local production underscores its dedication to sustainable development and economic empowerment in Africa.
A Brighter Future for Renewable Energy in Africa
This partnership represents a significant step forward in meeting South Africa’s energy needs through locally manufactured, high-efficiency PV modules. By combining JA Solar’s global expertise with ARTsolar’s local manufacturing capabilities, the collaboration sets a precedent for sustainable growth, technological advancement, and economic empowerment in Africa’s renewable energy sector.
As JA Solar continues to lead the way in solar innovation, this partnership reaffirms its vision of a greener, more sustainable Africa, powered by locally produced clean energy solutions.
